Sweet November

“Sweet November” has arrived and it’s that period of the year when the transition takes place from the year round rigour to that of enjoyment and merriment. For some it is the relief from the sudden downpour of FCQ’s,assignments and late-nights experiences of 1st year MBA, while for some it is the sense of ecstasy and euphoria moving towards The Fourth Quadrant.

Talking about the “Fourth Quadrant”, if November is sweet then December would be full of tadka. NEEV ’11 is round the corner and the campus is all fervent with energy and vigour as the teaser mails have started floating in, for the stars to descent on SIC campus in the likes of rap queen Hard Kaur andmaster drummer Sivamani.

The stage is set and the crown seeks the mighty head on which it will be bestowed - “AUGUSTUS” (the hunt for India’s best student manager) which was unfurled this week. AUGUSTUS ’10 makes me remember what Shakespeare once wrote,“Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown”. The candidates were intrigued, challenged, puzzled, intimidated and unsettled to test their mettle in unnerving conditions only to give chance to The One to emerge victorious.

Coming one month would unfold events which would develop the NEEV ’11 mania further and would conclude with the motto of creation … “WHERE I THINK, UNHINDERED, WHERE I ACT, UNSHACKLED”!!!

Déjà-vu

Neev 2010 was not just an event. It created magic amongst chaos. The campus came alive with people fighting in paintball wars, somersaulting and enjoying the thrill of zorbing, endorsing creative tattoos, swaying to the soothing melody of Parikrama or getting entangled in the muscle-flexing game of ‘Twister’ a.k.a. ‘Jinx-trap’- of which I was the organizer. While sitting for launch of the Neev theme this year, a feeling of déjà-vu passed over me. Something definitely felt familiar. And then the memories of Neev ’10 flashed right before my eyes. Around 2 hours before the game was scheduled to commence, the flex print of the game went missing, which was indispensible for the game. With the ‘chaos’ of a zillion activities happening on campus, it seemed impossible to trace the missing flex. I sensed uncertainty, darkness but yet an opportunity. I had a choice- to either forget about conducting the game or to take action and conduct the game somehow. I chose the latter. Perhaps fortune does favour the brave as then we found a soft copy of the print which I grabbed and, with someone on a bike, got a fresh print of the flex in about an hour. We were finally good to go. Not only did ‘Jinx-trap’ happen, it was also a hit. People queued up in huge numbers to try their hand(s)..and legs at the game. This experience symbolized the “Fourth Quadrant” to me – ambiguity, opportunity, risk and unexpected returns.

Transition

Neev which means foundation in Hindi stands up for its name for SCMHRD. Indeed Neev is the foundation! Foundation for students to show their management and creativity skills, foundation to bond when they slog day and night and work together to bring up a mammoth festival of this stature, foundation to spread the college’s name in the student community, and foundation to make Neev an identity of SCMHRD.
The passion which can be seen in the eyes of not only the neev team but the entire college which build Neev brick by brick is an experience worth remembering! The experience was different as a junior and then when the juniors become seniors, they experience things differently. As a junior the anxiety to see what Neev really is - sky high! Seniors become a support and take up important responsibilities to ensure the that Neev gets bigger and better over the previous year.
Each year Neev has a theme , which encourages a young mind to think out of the box, to think of a revolutionary idea which can change the routine! The theme this year-The fourth quadrant encourages a person to think beyond the obvious, out of your comfort zone and beyond the obvious. Lets wait and watch how this theme is highlighted in the different events and of course, the flagship event AUGUSTUS!
Neev 2011 - u r awaited.

A tribute to the great Steve Jobs

And so shall you be remembered, not because you gave music to our ears, but because you inspired generations. Not because your creation is vied by every youngster but because you dared and challenged fate. Not because you turned around a falling corporation but hithered and walked on a road less travelled which has made a difference.

And so the perpetrators of the fourth quadrant salute you, as you managed to travel in the space where a process of isolation is what is felt and yet you not just discovered it, but struggled with it, fought with it and created its physical form.

On one hand, have been the known, but restrictive, factors - intense competition, fast paced lives and monetary mindsets; that perhaps did not agree with you in the first place and led you to your sojourn in the 1980’s. On the other hand, was this unlit path, where knowledge had been abundant, but consequences were unexplored. Where a dark ocean of knowledge bred sparks of light, yet unshown.

This is also the space where collaboration and support could make ideas tangible but these ideas needed people who could come up with many new ideas to swerve around the obstacles that the original idea had headed for. And this is where you, Steve pioneered; which has perhaps made you immortal in the field of technology. Perhaps apple as a fruit today is not as known by the proverb, “An Apple a day, keeps the doctor away!” as much as it is known by your creation.

“A farewell is necessary before we can meet again, and meeting again, after moments or a lifetime is certain for those who are friends” so said someone once. Our physical meet with you now might not be possible Steve, but perhaps our ideas shall meet in The Fourth Quadrant.
Because its an entire spectrum of innovation that will light further desires,
Because your journey through The Fourth Quadrant will cause may more to take similar paths,
Because it is you whom we all would want to emulate
Because through your creation, you have left a little bit of yourself in each of us

Thank you for being here, Steve! Till we meet again.....
